You see I was going to post something similar but I don't like getting racial. Without guys like Muddy Waters, Lonnie Johnson, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix...etc...there would be no guitar. I mean the old Blues masters took what was relatively an obscure instrument that really didn't make enough noise to be taken seriously in a big band setting and revolutionized the world.
I wasn't getting racial, at least in my mind I wasn't, I was giving to props to the folks that I felt deserved it, I hope it wasn't interrupted as me getting "racial"....
Things have changed in 2014. Pretty sure there still a few black people that still enjoy rock and heavy metal. Most...especially the younger generation are into rap and hip hop.
Even the R&B of the 80's and 90's is starting to phase out.
A lot kids were conceived to 80's-90's R&B, LOL! Most R&B now sucks. Although I like Miguel, I jam his CD in the car sometimes.
Heck, I married a guy who was an aficionado of rap (and metal music-which I really dislike). We're divorced now, and it had nothing to do with our tastes in music.
I like some "rap" music, old school hip-hop and underground, obscure, or "conscious" stuff
by artists as varied as Mr. Lif, Digital Underground, Mos Def, 3rd Bass, Gang Starr, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Pete Rock,
as well as more "mainstream" musicians within that style, for instance The Roots and The Beastie Boys.
I also like ambient space-y mellow music, electronic bass-y soundscapes, some popular music from the 80s, and more...
In other words, I like a lot of different genres, not just rap (and not all that is rap is something I listen to-I pick & choose).
So, yeah, I'd date a guy who listened to the same type of music that I listen to.
Liking the music is not tantamount to worshiping or conforming to a "lifestyle" (such as that portrayed in lyrics).
Regardless of the genre, I'm not inclined to start behaving like famous people just because I like their music.
Maybe some folks are more suggestible or susceptible to influence from pop culture ?

No, sorry about that you probably weren't getting racial. I might just be overly sensitive to it.
LOL, I have a friend from high school. The guy is 6' 6", had long blond hair to his butt, liked heavy metal but absolutely loved rap. He's one of the most politically conservative people I've ever met and he's never gotten into any trouble whatsoever. This post...wow.
