Like... if a lady on work visa from Chile (for example) barely speaks English, but I can speak very basic Spanish.
Is it possible to have a long term serious relationship together without total verbal communication?

No.

Well, I'll say "possible," yes, "probable," no.

I see nothing but frustration stemming from this.

It depends on what you're looking for from a relationship.

I know a couple -- she was working as a live in maid, he had been through several divorces and was fed up with American women. They seem to be doing fine -- they have a couple of kids -- you don't need to talk at all with each other for that, she has dinner ready on the table when he gets home, she keeps the house clean and doesn't give him any back talk.

He's happy --- that's all he wants a woman for, and she apparently is happy also, she gets to live in and clean a better house than she would have had back in her own country, she has attractive kids that she dotes on.

It only would work if one of them is fluently bilingual. I'm fluent in English and French so in any region that has English or French as a language, there's no issue. But to communicate properly, someone has to be bilingual.

If you are willing to learn each other's languages, sure.

In college, I knew a girl who met a guy who spoke Spanish but very little English. She took Spanish courses in high school and college so that she could talk to her boyfriend about a lot more than she could initially. They paid for plane tickets to go across the border so that they could be together even if it was just over a weekend or for summer and winter breaks. It takes a lot of effort, but it can work.

Well, how will she tell you that she's married?

Yes if the person is willing and able to try.

I have done it, more than once. It helps if both people are skilled at language learning and at cross-cultural communication.
