If it was before your first date how do you know he's still active? Maybe it was something he was looking for prior to your meeting? It could have been years ago. It could have been during the winter when he was looking for something without strings.
Ultimately you know the person. If you want to be direct just ask him what his intention is, fling or long-term. That will be your answer.
