Based on another thread, I thought this was a good question.
First up, this isn't a hug with someone you know well or are dating.
It's the first hug.
I am thinking of a person you have just met or hardly know, but you are attracted to them. The situation is your first hug, it could be a date. It could be someone you met at a party or who is a friend of a friend. Or maybe it is a first meet of a blind or online date.
So where do you put your hands on this relative stranger?
Personally, I tend to hug tall people around the waist (and tall is in the neighborhood of over 6 feet for me) and shorter people around the neck, but not too close.
any place above the waist and NON sexual. when i go to hug a woman, even one i have known a long time, i will put my arm around her shoulders. this is the safest place. next would be around their waist, this is the second safest place. these are non sexual locations, and allow me to pull the person close allowing a measure of intimacy, but a safe intimacy.
I Have my hands on their upper back, shoulder blades-back. Etc. When I hug anyone it's always like that, as I am not really a hug person, and alot of times it one-handed lol With people I know, or don't. Still the same.
I haven't had the chance of giving a hug to anyone I was attracted to. So, I can just guess that it'd be the same. Being short, some bend a bit to hug me, and my hands get the back of their shoulders. If I establish a closer relationship, the hugs may get better.
Sort of around the neck or shoulders. If I'm hugging a guy, he usually hugs around my waist or across my back, under my arms. I hug on top of his arms. If I am hugging another woman, my clasp still usually ends up on top of hers. I'm not a very huggy person, but when I do, I am the hugger not the hugee.
I'm shorter than most people I hug, so my arms go under their arms. Folks usually hug me across my back, and I hug them where ever my arms fall but usually that's across the back unless they are really tall.
One thing I consciously try to avoid is jacking someone's jaw with MY shoulder or squeezing their ear against my shoulder. It's a killer with earrings on.
My grandmother used to get me with the ear squeeze every time.
I have to lean over to give people hugs otherwise they are grabbing my butt most of the time. I'm pretty tall. Also it looks like I'm assaulting someone with a choke if I don't

I never really thought about it. I have hugged a good many first time acquaintances, and my hands just naturally go (up or down, depending on whether they are taller or shorter than I am) to the backs of their shoulders. I am 5'4" tall.
I can think of one of my good friends who is probably 6'7" or so and with him from the beginning all I could reach was his waist, but otherwise the waist is a little too intimate for me.
