I know some people call shy cute, but at what point does shyness become annoying and a hindrance? I turned someone down and while I obviously feel I'm not in the wrong, her friends apparently do. Guess my biggest mistake was saying exactly why I turned her down. And this isn't a girl in high school. She has to be at least 22. Mind you I'm not talking simple introversion here. I'm talking shy to the point of being unable to look me in the eye and running away.
Not everyone is an extroverted social butterfly. I get that. I'm not like that either. But at what point does simple introversion become shyness and a negative quality? My feeling is if someone is shy to the point where they can't even look you in the eye and run away out of fear of rejection, that's not simple introversion. To me, that's an entire issue that needs to be addressed.
If someone is that shy, they don't allow anyone in. It makes it impossible for people to get to know them personally, so they can't even decipher whether they like them or not. I'm shy but I still talk to people when they speak to me. I don't have an issue with looking people in the eye, even though it can get awkward after a while lol.
I wouldn't say that her issue is the kind she needs to see a specialist for. I think that is something you have to come out off on your own, with the help of friends other people close to you of course. Introvert isn't the right way to describe her though.
When referring to shyness and introversion, you're talking about two different things. There are social introverts who don't have an issue communicating. I can agree that being shy to the point that you can't even look someone in the eye, much less have a conversation with someone trying to open up to you can become a hindrance. Obviously, this is how you felt so you acted accordingly.

That's the whole point. We're not talking simple introversion. We're talking shyness to the point of being unable to look your crush in the eye and pretty much run away.
If she is so shy why were you turning her down? I would think she would be afraid to approach a man to get turned down?
Because to me, shy is cute when you're 15 and not in your mid 20s. I don't believe in cutting a certain gender slack for being shy. I'm introverted and prefer more outgoing girls who have no issues talking to guys they like.

Her friends are trying to help her out so of course they are going to encourage you to give her another chance. If you are the slightest bit interested in her, it would be worth some effort to get to know her better. If she has no other qualities that would encourage you to overlook her social anxiety, then she just becomes a charity case.
