Looking for a female perspective here. If things are going well during a date, I will usually ask the girl for permission to kiss her.

Is this considered gentlemanly or is it better just to move in and see what happens?

Sure if you want things to be awkward.

Also not a fan. Prefer the initiative be taken and feel like all confidence is drained from the situation if a guy asks.

If you're horrible at reading body language and aren't sure whether she's green lighted a kiss in her mind, I think stating something along the lines of, "I want to kiss you" or "I want to move closer to you right now" can be playful and can also gauge her reaction. But "can I kiss you" always sounds like it's coming from an insecure teenage boy.

How is it awkward to ask for something intimate as a kiss?

For me, its the other way around. As a teen, I never asked- went straight in for the lips, breast and all.

Now that I'm older, I typically ask (if I'm unclear about her body language) unless shes all up on me first.

Not a fan of the first date kiss, generally. Unless it's someone I already know and like. But kissing a stranger on a 1st date? Not likely to happen.

Best to read body language. Best not to try unless you're getting some clear signals.
