It totally depends on the "crime." Are we talking non-violent civil disobedience or armed robbery? Was he defending me or someone else from some crazed thug who was threatening to do bodily harm or was he the crazed thug threatening bodily harm? Was he growing a little pot in his backyard for his own use or was he running drugs for a drug cartel? Did he step on the toes of some powerful child pornography ring he was investigating or was he part of the child pornography ring? Not everyone who is in prison is really there for a real crime. In some states, you can even go to prison for collecting rain water! It's completely asinine! So yeah, in the U.S.'s prison-for-profit scheme, where practically everything is a crime and therefore practically everyone is a criminal, I can't automatically hold it against someone who got caught up in that net.

If married, what if your now spouse did something after y'all were married and was to be put away in jail for at least a year and maybe even 2 or 3 years. Would you stick around and support them no matter what they did to be locked up this one time?

Whatever they did, they were guilty. Would you date, or if married stay no matter what the crime was?

If you say it depends on what they did to be locked up for a year, what crimes are you ok with to stay?
No. That's what my mom did when I was a kid and it ruined our lives.

He was guilty of accessory to robbery. But then his sentence was extended for attempting to break out of prison. My mom met him a few weeks after he got out and married him 3 months later. Stupid.

not everybody in jail/prison deserves to be staying in there in the first place.

Secondly, a lot of people are able to lead productive life after jail time. My best friend has been in jail, but he is now a business owner, a great father and a wonderful husband who has never cheated on his wife. He's a good person who helps everybody in need.

You sound way too judgmental.

1. minor drug charge is okay with me.
2. assault - if he was defending helpless people or if he did that just put the bullies in their places

Repeat offenders that are older and should know better and don't learn a lesson, NOPE!
So one murder is ok? One child abduction is ok? Running over 1 person with a car is ok? Setting only 1 house on fire is ok?

Nope. Any jail time is a deal breaker for me and I don't care what the reason was. If I was married to someone who had to go to jail, we would definitely be getting a divorce.

That is why hiring a criminal defense attorney is important. The attorney can come up with defense strategy. A lot of young, angry and the poor took plea bargain too quickly. They didn't realize a DUI or a minor drug charge can pretty much ruin somebody's life especially in a quite black/white judgmental society we are living in right now.

If the "crime" was committed at a very young age for reasons I can accept, I have no problems dating him.
