If the asker is your wife, the only acceptable answer is "no, of course not" delivered without a nanosecond of hesitation. Embellish with any compliment or term of endearment you prefer, and immediately change the subject.

I've always believed it's prudent to not ask a question that you don't want an honest answer to.

I think you should HONESTLY say "you look fine". Obviously you're with her, despite or because of her body type so whether she is overweight is kinda beside the point. Being in a relationship is not an excuse to be rude in the name of honesty.

Agree.
What kind of question is that?

It's a question that someone who is feeling insecure asks when she needs reassurance and support from a person she trusts. I will agree that it is a landmine that requires a great deal of tact, but I also think that it opens the door for deepening a relationship if approached with genuine love and concern.

Hopefully, I'll never get asked that question.

"I love you and your body, but if it's bothering you I'd be more than happy to workout with you and eat lighter. My pants are feeling little tight."

I told her I didn't have a fat wife or a skinny wife, I had the perfect wife. Was it enough to assure her? Not really, but that was a personal issue for her to work through herself with my support. And as I've indicated on other threads here, she has made an immense amount of progress with it.
Wow, if that did not make her want to have sex with you in 15 minutes or less, you may want to suggest counseling. Perfect answer BTW.
