Your making this too hard. It's supposedly a play on the word eggroll. Instead of using it in the Chinese food respect the father is using it as an egg and a roll(bread) and added pancakes to supposedly make it a complete meal. It's not a good joke, it's not funny. That's why they were embarrassed.
No I meant they actually had egg roll...the kid had egg roll on his plate, as did his dad. But somehow the dad hadn't even touched his egg roll and began eating pancakes.

I guess you just had to be there to understand.
Finally you came back to explain! I still don't get it so I accept that it's just not for me to get it. lol
Late eighties, girlfriend of about two years, beautiful but highly insecure type. Picture a crowded restaurant on a Saturday night, mirrored walls and ceiling, waitresses in tasteful but tiny outfits.
Now I've always been a people watcher, since I was a kid, so my eyes roamed every direction. An honest thing for me to do, no intentions. Girlfriend flings her fork at me and shouts out "just which one do you want to.....!!!!!".
One of those moments when everything comes to a grinding halt and the world's eyes all turn on you. Never knew staring at the floor for an hour could bring such peace.
Was out on a date with my now-husband, and I think we were engaged at the time. We were having dinner at his favorite restaurant and the waitress came up and said to him, "Hi Wayne, didn't I see you in here last week with some other woman?"
LOL. That made for some interesting conversation.
Same thing happened to me and it was just 2 girls I had been dating for like a month. The second girl was pretty mad and said I was tacky for taking her to the same restaurant. But it wasn't my choice. We happened to drive by it and she said she wanted to go there, so I went along with it.
