Cream of the crop doesn't mean the hottest, richest, most brilliant, etc. This is all subjective, Op. What most people want is the person that is right for them. They want the cream of their crop.
Yep. Here's my new OLD blurb. It's short, but I hope it works:
I'm looking for a verbally and physically abusive, drug-addicted, felonious gang-banger who doesn't bathe, speaks fluent profanity, and has 6 kids with 6 different women. Must be flabby, smelly, sociopathic, and fond of illegal firearms. Bonus if he tortures small animals.

I would think that when someone decides that someone else is right for them.. They do consider that they're getting the "cream of the crop" ( at least in their eyes).
At least in my generation (20s), I have noticed that many want the perfect man or woman and aren't willing to settle for less. They see Joe Blow get the hot blonde or Girl Next Door get Don Drapper and think it can happen to them as well. And sure statistically maybe it could, but maybe that means waiting 15 years to find that. I would rather not wait and have a Mr. Right Now instead of Mr. Perfect and cats for a while.

A LOT of 20-somethings don't think this way, though. I know quite a few average 20-somethings marrying other average 20-somethings. People are just happy to find a good match: someone who shares their vision of life, their goals, a few common interests and values.
