Since women are trying to date up and above them, and of course each woman can only marry 1 man....

Then by nature of simple mathematics and statistics, eventually some women would have to really settle?

And to further prove my stance: I hear a lot of the older women say that all the men they are interested in are taken.

So basically that means, some of the women have succeeded in dating "up" and thus, other women are forced, by nature of statistics, to date down.

More and more women are dating down. It's sort of a trend. Because more men are having trouble staying employed, or staying in college to get a marketable degree. I know a number of women in the professions who are married to guys in construction.

Some men date "up", too. They always have, but the numbers are growing, now. And the women don't view it as being "forced" to date down. They make a choice to go with the guy who treats them great, has common interests with them, and is stable and dependable. No one's forcing the women to do anything.

Then of course there are those who date at about the same level too.

Over the course of millions of people, it balances out.

So, women are dating down because of a mans low financial value?

I don't think the quoted text in the OP's thread was about money, it was in a thread about "physical attraction."

Since everyone has a different definition of what is physically attractive, I don't think you can really apply math to it. For example, one woman might find "tall, dark haired men" to be handsome and her "standard." But in that very thread the OP quoted, another woman said she liked short men. Say the woman who likes tall men is a blonde and the one who likes short men is a redhead. So if you put these two women in a room with a tall man and a short man, and the tall man likes blondes and the short man likes redheads, no one has to "date down" everyone feels they "dated up."

Since it is expected for men to be the ones who pursue, show they have what it takes, and so on, we normally see men dating down since the beginning of humanity. It doesn't seem like a turn on for women to be with a man they have to take care of, take out, and so on. But like others have said, a small change can be seen in the horizon as exceptions always exist out there. Heck, when it comes to economic status I can say a girl "dated down" with me as I was just an exchange student in her country (Japan) while she was already in a top position in a Forbes 500 international firm. So yes, there are some exceptions out there somewhere.

I'll say a big number of couples date around the same level, then women dating up, and then there might be some women out there who are fine dating down.

This is what the pundits would have us believe. Prior to the 60's/70's, a high percentage of men dated "down", because women didn't have the same career opp'ties. Now that women do have those opp'ties, but the economy is still struggling, men are having trouble employment-wise. There's also been a lot of media attention to the fact that boys aren't performing in school as well as they used to, and more women than men are getting BA's and advanced degrees. So there are big demographic changes happening in that regard. The result is that a smaller percentage of women are marrying up, more are marrying equals (than in the 50's, say), and more are marrying down than ever before.

Also, it depends on how you define marrying up/down. In the old days, it meant marrying across class lines, even if the guy from humble origins were in law school, planning to marry his upper-middle class gf (the "trophy wife" of the times). Nowadays, it seems to mean marrying up/down income-wise, only. Some clarification for the discussion would be helpful.

Yes, they are facing this reality today. That or getting alot of cats to keep them company. Stats to keep in mind - only 40% of men get to pass on their genes, women think that 80% of men are below average looking. haha

to be fair, at the root of much anger by men of being turned down bek she does not want to settle, is the fact that many men dont think its ladies choice.
shame shame on us.

jHey, gang, don't you just love these stats picked out of thin air? Kinda like that chart that showed that 12-year-olds were as sexually appealing to men as 21-year-olds, and that 14 was the pinnacle of female attractiveness for men?

This is the Fantasyland ride. Enjoy your weekend, all.
