I would have said:
"so, he needs a woman who will work full time AND raise 4 kids so he can tend to his career...hmm interesting,,,yes...PLEASE tell him where he can find one of those"...then kiss him on the cheek and go join in on another conversation elsewhere...sometimes indirecr sarcastic humor gets the point across better than moping and worrying and getting clingy and needy and asking him for clarification...he might have been totally kidding

if he thinks he can do better, its better he do that now and not in 3-5 years

Pretty standard guy response. I think I've heard that line well over a dozen times during standard guy chat.

It means nothing other than being a standard joke like similar to "that's what she said".

Move on, and learn to communicate better with your partner rather than run to the internet and ask strangers.
