POF for example, asks if you have a car, which I find odd.

I don't see what you could possibly infer from this question. Whatever conclusions you may draw upon, you might as well ask, "Do you have at least $5000 to afford item X and at least $2000 per year to maintain that item?"

On top of that, they don't ask if you are renting or owning either.

If you do not live in a major metro area with great public transit, not having a car might be a hindrance to dating. I mean, unless you want to have your date pick you up each time?

Just another aspect of sizing someone up.

I think just to help determine how "mobile" you would be to get to dates, appts., etc on your own time?

That would be my guess, anyway.

Some cities have AWESOME public transportation but others, not so much (I can't imagine navigating all areas of Los Angeles using public transportation, for example) so it probably helps imply how flexible you'd be dating people in areas not within your immediate vicinity?

Yep, not driving in this city seriously hampers one's mobility. Public trans is not so extensive as to be super viable.

Its just another way of asking how much money you make, or how well off you are.

I regard this as being yet another pathetic heuristic by which the lower-middle-class aims to distinguish itself from the underclass. Do I have a car? No, I have a tumbril drawn by a pack of llamas.
