Did you not read the article, OP? It provides its own theories.

However, the article also said December and March rate equally with January. Maybe it's about the stress of the holidays, or the stress of gloomy winters, SAD, and all that. The opposite of spring and summer, which tend to be much more conducive to relationship-building.

Well, I did tell my ex that I wanted a divorce on January 5th, 2015. I didn't care for presents, but I didn't want to spoil Christmas either. It hasn't been too bad as I had him over for lunch on the day after Christmas this year.
