Some of my hobbies are deal breakers for some women, if they can't join me or enjoy the time apart it won't work. I'm an avid snowboarder/hiker and really into biking and dirtbikes in the summer.. Like 3-4 times a week.

I also collect knives and I carry one every day which I've been called out on before by women. Ive carried a knife on me since I was 7 years old and I love different models and expensive ones. I've never carried one for self defense or anything.. It's just a tool and it sucks when I forget it. People from the cities always ask me why I carry knife on me, then they always ask to burrow it to open a box or something

I'm not a shopper but I don't mind women who are, as long as they stay within their budget. I'm terrible at fashion so I need girlfriends to help me. Lol
I don't mind tagging along if they're enjoying themselves.

I love dogs but but as someone stated here the people who have 3-4 dogs and talk non stop about rescues and stuff drive me nuts. My one dog is needy enough, luckily he's well behaved and socialized so I can take him most places without an issue. I told a date I got him from a breeder (Neighbor lady who has bred GSDs for years and also trains them as service dogs) and she flipped out on me, telling me only awful people breed dogs and so on.

The only thing that I can think of that would be an absolute deal breaker for me is hunting.

Otherwise, as others have said, I believe it's about moderation. My partner has enjoyed collecting very small scale military models for over 40 years. His collection numbers well into the 10's of thousands at this point. I don't understand the draw, but I don't have to. As we joke, it keeps him off the streets. Due to the actual size of these models (1/2400 scale mostly), the collection fits very nicely into one room of the house. It's something that makes him happy, he doesn't spend the mortgage money on them, and it gets him out of my hair at least for a little while on the weekends. Win/win/win.

We also have many interests that we share, so there is, I believe, a nice balance.

I don't think smoking, drinking and gambling are hobbies. I think more of painting, collecting, posting on this forum and making things are more hobbies.

"A hobby is a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one's leisure time. Hobbies can include collecting themed items and objects, engaging in creative and artistic pursuits, playing sports, or pursuing other amusements."

No one has mentioned sailing or building your own audio equipment, let alone buying it and listening to music on something other than an iPhone.

EXCELLENT list. The only things I would add would be smoking, drug use, body "art", hunting, paint-balling, frequent playing of video games, or anything violent. However, I wouldn't mind any kind of dancing.

The only general comment I have to add to this list is that I would not date anyone with a very boring (to me) occupation or hobby, but I am glad that I did not feel that way when I started dating my husband 32 years ago! He is in the engineering field (definitely technical and not a people-oriented career field at all) and into sci-fi/fantasy in a fairly big way (meaning sci-fi fantasy is about 98% of what he reads for entertainment). I find both subjects -- engineering and sci-fi/fantasy extremely boring and difficult to listen to (let alone appear interested in) -- but he is such a good man and wonderful partner in almost all other ways, that I gladly accept those "blemishes" in what I consider to be an otherwise perfect man!

I didn't mention them bc although they aren't my hobbies, I wouldn't care. In fact, I could probably appreciate both of those.

All three of them can absolutely be hobbies. Gambling is the most obvious; you're playing a game. If we can acknowledge that "playing games" is a hobby, then gambling also follows.

Regarding smoking/drinking: I kind of see what you mean, but on the other hand, I know people who don't otherwise smoke or drink, yet are enthusiasts about cigars or certain alcohols. One could argue that the activity itself isn't a hobby, but the research, collection, and discussion of the activity is the hobby, and I wouldn't really fight them on it. Conversely, you could argue that all of the aforementioned activities are kind of "lumped in" with the main activity (smoking or drinking) itself.

"couch-potatoes". Life's too short to just lounge around in front of the t.v. or napping during all your free time. My dad done this and has got worse now that he's older. I find it sad.
