Sounds like you can't afford to get married.

Not one to place blame it's just our state is expensive to live in. Average rent is $1000 to $1200 a month. The closer you get to urban centers rent gets higher and further away like 90 minutes rent is affordable. However, we feel it's not worth it commuting to work 180 minutes a day.

We could live in some of the cities fiancé not keen on it do to my hours I work 3 shifts. With the city cheap rents there is a high rate of drug use. I worked at a few hospitals in the state that are located in major cities so gives me insight into the rough area's, ha.

Young man, 50+ years ago this was very common. Lots of immigrant families have multiple generations living in the same house. Living with parents to get started is nothing to be ashamed of. Tons of young people, married and single are being partially supported in various ways by their parents to get them started in life. When we got married 40 years ago, after being married a year, her parents gave us 1/2 the down payment so that we could buy a house. They also bought us a new car a few years later when our first child was born. Getting started in life is normally hard for lots of young couples. Don't hang your head. Give thanks in stead for such loving and kind parents.

Only other idea is look into buying a home. I mean we hope to only I've in this area for another 4 or 5 years. There is a good number of places $80K and under. Can put a down payment on a place with money from the wedding. In 2 years it's be cheaper than a 800 a month rent.

And if the $5,000 HVAC breaks down a month after you move in?

That's doable on your current income unless you have a lot of debt. And that rent is uber cheap compared to other places.

Agreed. Rent in many cities seems to be around $1000+/month for a 2 BR unit. Is your fiance currently living at her parents'? Where do you live now?

Are you planning to spend a lot on the wedding?

Don't do the MIL thing. Make it work some other way.

I'm not a fan of living in my parents basement or garage. I'd do anything else but that!

My wife and I lived in a basement apartment in my in-laws' house for two years when we first married. We had our own entrance, living room, bed room, kitchen and bath. The only thing we had to share was the driveway and washer/dryer.

Since we both worked, we weren't home much anyway. And in order to save for a place of our own, we used my salary to pay bills, buy groceries, etc. Her salary was direct deposited to a savings account, to save for a down payment on a house.

It wasn't the easiest 2 years, but we saved a lot of money not paying outrageous rent somewhere else.

Well, keep in mind that Americans get tax breaks for marrying.
