Haha, well I only ask because I had this friend who was in love with this guy but he treated her like dirt. He was real scum. Everybody told her she's too good for him even the guy himself. She wouldn't believe anybody and he ended up getting her pregnant and leaving her. He was also messing around with prostitutes and drugs at the time. :/ I guess in that case he and the world was right.

I could be totally off base here, but why don't you act like you are his friend now, and suggest to him yourself that you know someone that might be perfect for him?
Sorry, but the Sag in me always goes for being blunt and honest.
In my experience, this is definitely something that only very insecure people say. They are convinced that once you get to know them, you will discover their terrible flaws and dump them. Generally when guys tell me this, I assume what they really mean is "You have your mental/emotional act together and I completely don't"
A guy told me this once.. I actually genuinely believed it, because he cheated on me when he could've just been mature and broken up with me first. Also he told me I was a really nice person. So I did believe I was too good for him, because I am a better person than that and deserve better.
Some blokes might actually believe it and present it as a compliment...... " oh you're too good for me " basically tying to tell the girl that's he's struck gold in pulling her......
However in reality I agree with elnina it's just a polite way to say " I'm not interested "
That line is mind games. They want you to go on and on about how great they are and how they are good enough. I wouldn't date someone who said this, I would say " maybe you are right" and end it. It's a sign of games and emotional issues
