It's called doing what you want to get what you want.
That's why it's important not to make "threats" or set a bottom line unless I'm willing to stick with it and follow through. So when I say, "If something doesn't change in these areas, then I'm out of here" and if after xyz amount of time passes, and nothing has changed, then it's up to me to follow through and I do.

Otherwise it's just a power play and I don't want that in relationship, I want mutual respect, kindness, listening and responding to what the other person is saying or expressing, both ways for both of us.

And I like the idea of speaking softly and calmly and briefly, when I am asking for something. True power is quiet and present, doesn't need to exercise itself. By my actions he knows I mean business; and if he is not able to listen to words and respond in a reasonable manner (even if it's to be honest and say "honey I can't do that") then I'm not going to resort to histrionics to express myself, there is no dignity for me in that. And like the person says posting, all the "change" shouldn't come after the person leaves. Then it's more about they don't want to "lose a prized possession" or "see her with another man" or deal with the "hurt pride" of her leaving him...those are ALL ABOUT HIM and have nothing at all to do with respect for her and nurturing a relationship and interacting in a mature manner.

I have to agree with the opening post this does happen....with me it's felt like they don't want me or to be in relationship with me, but MOST OF ALL they don't want another man with his paws all over me because he sees me as his property. If I start feeling like his property....big red flag.
