Right...effort is necessary but that's not quite the same as WORK. Effort probably has to be conscious but it's not constant and tiring.

One indicator for me is coming home, seeing your SO's car in the driveway, then being disappointed. The relationship is over if you aren't excited to see that person.
Yes, for me it's been NOT looking forward to a weekend together if it's an LDR. Or when you look forward to the weekend (in your mind) and then when you're actually together you're immediately irritated/annoyed/tired and ready for the weekend to be over to get back to work!

My answer is when you don't care anymore.
I mean you don't care.
You don't care to fight.
You don't care to talk about stuff.
You don't care.

- Definitely more friend-like and transactional vs. caring.

Guess I can personally boil it down to: I'm going through the motions, it's moderately convenient to have them around for events and parties, but otherwise you just...could not...care less one way or another.

If they split, or I split: at that point, mostly irrelevant. I mean, "whatever, get out."
Wow. You shouldn't have to deal with a single mom who does not like guns, cars, motorcycles, power tools, and/or the Mariners. There are child-free women out there who "get" these things. There in Seattle you ought to be able to find at least one.

Things being thrown at you. Every other word is a cuss word and not said in jest. A significant fraction of inbound communications are criticisms. You treasure your time away (including your worst days at work). You start to think that living in your truck would be better than staying.
