What's the problem? It's a huge compliment. No one is young forever, everyone gets old. So when a guy says that you look good for your age, it should be taken as a very big compliment. It's saying that you are aging well. You should be happy and thankful that someone is reassuring you that you're still looking good and will probably continue to do so for some time. If they didn't tell you this, you wouldn't know, and you'd think you're ugly even if you're not. Men don't have this problem. Is it because people think that men age better than women? Perhaps, but a compliment is still a compliment.
So next time a guy says hey, you look great for your age, smile and be happy. At least you're getting a compliment.
Why don't younger guys like being told they are immature ?
Because "You're quite mature for your age" to a younger guy, is the opposite synonyms of OP's compliment to an older woman.

I think the OP's compliment works better for women coming to 60 yrs old and above, these women are more likely to feel flattered by being told how well maintained they are. Perhaps unless the woman is average or below looking, not exactly what women younger than that would craved to be complimented for.

If you were more alert, you would have learned that "damning with faint praise" is never acceptable.
Does this really have to explained to the OP? If they can't see it's backhanded compliment and those aren't really nice then there really isn't much more to say.
It's the same as when someone says to an overweight woman. "My, what a lovely face you have" we all know what they are talking about, same deal.

The bolded is the crux of it.
And it's usually a good idea to not tell women (or anyone) how they should react to your comments, or what they should be feeling. That's not your call.
