He wants all the benefits of a real relationship without actually being in one or doing the work of one (and being available to meet a woman he truly wants to commit to). Win-win for him.
If the guy is calling it a FWB, then that's what it is. You don't have a relationship if one of the people doesn't think he's in one.
And this is a classic case of why you shouldn't have a FWB thing. Why? Because, after a few sessions of humpalumpadingdong, somebody gets attached. Unless it's too sociopaths bumping uglies, one is going to bond with the other. It's freaking unavoidable.
The guy, by the way, is kind of an idiot. Because he's sending mixed signals. Going on trips, using pet names, and keeping some of his stuff there permanently is a sign of a relationship rather than something very casual. So when your 'friend' has the inevitable meltdown, the "what are we doing" talk, he'll likely act all confused and be ticked off that she suddenly violated the spirit of their agreement. Then he'll post some stupid rant on the CD Relationship forum about how stupid women are.
And he would have a point in this case. Getting into a FWB situation with your ex is a seriously bad idea. Just dumb beyond belief.

Do you have a bond with your friends? I do. It's just a different type of bond, and sex often doesn't change that. It can, but it also can not.
