Leaving roommate
The lease ends in a few months. If I don't renew, do I have to let my roommate know? He has made the last few months of mine miserable. So I thought I wouldn't give him the respect of letting him know that he needs to find another roommate or will the apartment notify him? Have not decided if I will stay or go yet.
Your thoughts

If the lease is in your name.. he will have to apply for the lease.. I would think that you would let him know that you plan on moving and that the lease is now in question. That will give him time to react to the situation. Even though he has made life miserable for you.. you are doing the more honorable thing by notifying him that you have made a choice not to stay there. But that is my opinion

Is your roommate a former boyfriend. (I assume so since you posted this in the Relationships sub-forum.) As bitter as it might be for you, I'd let him know that you are leaving. Like SATX said, if your name is on the lease, then you would have to let him know (and obviously the landlord).

Is the lease in both your names? If it is you will need his permission to sign off of the lease.

according to the lease I can leave when the lease terminates but I will have to notify apartment manager within 2 months notice before leaving in writing. It said nothing about notifying roommate. But I will check.

As others were asking, is the lease just on your name or also on the other guy's name?
Even if the lease is just on your name, I wouldn't notify just your landlord and not him. Otherwise, he wouldn't know that the apt. lease was up (since his name is not on the lease) and he'd be evicted as soon as your lease ended. I know you'd like to see that, but he could sue you for that.

You should find out.
If you are not going to renew your 1/2 of it, then yes you should be telling him.
If the lease is only in your name, I'd imagine you'd still have to tell him as you are responsible for him.
What did he do that you would just throw him to the street without letting him know he needs to get out?

Tell your fellow lease-holder of your plan to NOT renew the lease. If you are both on the lease you are both legally bound to the terms of the lease and any attempt by you to circumnavigate the lease terms simply to create problems for him is not only morally reprehensible but could land you in trouble legally. He has the option of either finding another room-mate or not renewing but if you leave him in the dark and the landlord doesn't catch the discrepancy you may end up in civil court to your detriment...
