There seem to be quite a few gay clubs and bars in the Lansing area from a search I just did. I'd also recommend searching Meetup.com and seeing if there are any LGBT meetups happening. Tindr is also an avenue to go for dating; its less of a hookup app than some other apps I'm told, and I know many people (gay and straight) who have found their SOs on Tindr.
As for physical appearance, I say there is someone for everyone. But (and acknowledging that I don't know much or anything about your physical appearance) I'd start with people in your age group/with a similar physique as you. One thing I have heard from my gay friends is disappointment with the dating scene. Some of these friends, however, are overweight, yet are only trying to talk to dudes who are in shape, etc. There's nothing wrong with that inherently, but you ("you" as in a general sense, not you as the OP) can't get offended if people hold you to the same standard that you hold others too.
