Research has identified a positive link between the economy (reflected in the unemployment rate) and the rate of divorce in the U.S. When unemployment increases, divorces increase. See: Scott J. South. 1985. "Economic Conditions and the Divorce Rate: A Time-Series Analysis of the Postwar United States" Journal of Marriage and Family 47:31-41.

This is really a good time for us.
I love this recession and have never been happier.
The economy, based on greed and lies, is crashing down in a cloud of worthless paper and meaningless numbers and taking with it the false gods of materialism and consumption.
I dance on the fallen bodies.
If I had only known how easy it would be to make this happen, I would have traded my hammer and sickle for a button down collar years ago and we could have avoided all that marching, singing, and demonstrating.

That's interesting. I can see bickering and fighting increasing as people get more and more stressed out, but I still think the person with lesser or non-existing earning potential would give a divorce a better thought...

Well, OK, that too - but it doesn't quite have the same oomph, does it?

Certainly economics will come into play in many break-ups, but I think that divorce is largely driven by deeply emotional and personal aspects rather than fiscal calculus.
