I was alone in my apartment, this was back in 1992 - heard a knock on the door. Felt a little bit wary - looked through the spy hole saw a young lad - looked very young and innocent(!) I opened the door, he said "I want to ****** You", looking into his eyes he looked unhinged - I knew I had to keep calm. I said "My boyfriend won't want to hear this, you better go.." He just stared at me. I said "Look, you can't go around saying stuff like that, have you any family or friends?" "Nope" He said still staring at me. "Well, you need to get some friends, have a life..." I don't know how I stayed so calm. "OK" he said and walked away.

I shut the door and didn't go out agian for the rest of the day!!!

Later, found out he'd walked out of a psych. clinic in the town - followed me home. He just looked so innocent and harmless. Just goes to show! Never judge a book by it's cover!

I was charged by a brown bear on my birthday once. Fortunately she stopped about 20 foot away...then turned and walked off. I consider that birthday a very special one. Because that bear let me live to see the next one.

After a night of waitressing at the Olive Garden, my ex-fiance and other co-workers went over to Applebees for a few drinks. Right at closing, the rest of the regular customers-about 5 of them pulled out shot guns and held us all up. They were screaming obsenties, made us lay down with our faces in the floor, hit each one of us in the back with the gun, beat 2 of my co-workers with one of them, had us line up against the wall like a firing squad, and then had us march into the freezer and lay piled on top of each other like sardines.

I couldn't eat in a restaurant after dark for a couple of months.

I was held up at gunpoint by a teen-age gang in the parking lot of a grocery store. I was so scared all I could say was "Jesus!" and I got confused and instead of unlocking my car door (to give him my purse which he was demanding, I locked the door. ) He didn't shoot me. They kicked the car window in anger and ran off.

Lessons learned:
There is power in the name of Jesus.
Don't go grocery shopping after dark (especially in questionable neighborhoods!)

I had a near-death experience as a little girl. I drowned. Actually being dead was wonderful. Getting there was terrifying, obviously. Being dead, I didn't see a tunnel or a blinding light. But I was "above" things, somehow. Physically. Intellectually I felt as if I had been sleeping all my life and now I had woken up and I just had this amazing perspective on everything. I've never felt peace like that before or since.

I'm in no hurry to die now but I'm not afraid of what happens after I die, because of this experience.

On my 31st birthday, I went rock climbing with friends about 50 miles from home. On the way back, we were driving on Route 15 near Leesburg Virginia on a 2-lane road. I was driving about 60 and there was a line of cars behind me. At one point, there was a line of cars coming toward me. As the cars got really close, the second car in line veered suddenly into oncoming traffic (i.e., us.) I jerked the wheel to the right, went off the road, but got control of my car and looked in the rear view mirror just in time to see the veering car run head-long into the car behind me. It turned out that all 3 people in the oncoming car were killed as well as the 2 people in the car behind me.

The weirdest and eeriest thing about the accident was that the next day at work, almost as soon as I got there (I worked for a government agency with about 600 people in our building,) I heard that the general counsel for our agency had been killed in a car accident over the weekend. Holding my breath, I asked where the accident happened. On Route 15 near Leesburg. So I actually knew the person who was driving the oncoming car (her parents were also in the car with her.)

To this day (19 years later,) those friends in the car with me still think I saved their lives. It was all instinct. I just felt awful about the 5 people who were killed and I still do.

I was living completely alone for the first time in my life. I was so excited to be in my one-bedroom apartment - until I began getting phone calls from a guy asking me to meet him in the laundry room so he could "make love" to me! It was obviously someone who lived in the building. The manager knew who it was, and said the guy (who was married, btw!) would harass single females this way. After that, the calls stopped.
