I watched one of the Real Housewives of OC episodes, where the mom threw a party for her daughter which included a yacht in the harbor. Had a flashback to my teen years in the same town, similar yacht party...same attitudes from spoiled rich girls...same flashy people.

So for me, it was very much a scary deja vu moment...glad that I left that area decades ago...but obviously it hasn't changed much...

Really though (or realistically) How much of the population really lives like that? I'm a stay at home mom and we just don't live like that!

It's fun to watch at night because it's like a mini soap opera but I just can't take the people seriously. I know they are supposed to be "real" but they are so far removed from me that I just laugh. The Botox, boob jobs, bratty kids who they say are soooo wonderful, keeping up with the joneses. I look at that and will take my simple life, simple marriage anyday.

Don't get me started on "My Sweet Sixteen". That's just craziness!

Among the families I grew up around there, these people represented probably 1/3 of the people in our neighborhood. And for the other 2/3, they were just as tied up with keeping up appearances but less truly wealthy...more strapped trying to pay for it all...trust me.

^ I trust you. I remember when Lauri(?) was going to marry the land developer. One of the women was like, I am so prooud of her really it is great, she is going to be really rich now. So yeah, I don't think her husband makes enough to keep her pleased. Sorry for bringing back such an old thread. What ever happened to sage, I want to know more about the people in your once neighborhood?

I don't get reality TV. Try having a life of one's own. So much more satisfying than watching somebody else's, don't you think?

Popular shows, perhaps, but I admit I sometimes watch the senate on C-Span or local government and school board stuff on the local cable access channels late at night.

Of course, those shows probably don't get huge ratings, either.
