Absolutely! Poor guys don't have much of a chance at improvement and even if they do, they're likely to make things worse rather than better.
To counter where this is going ...I give you ...
Donald Trump
Bill Gates
Jack Welch
Howard Stern
David Spade was dating Heather Locklear for crying out loud!

Personality and being funny can help a lot, but wallet size is an attractive trait!

Women have it worse.

Men are visual, and we can look beyond some physical flaws.
Initially, men do not.

Have I ever mentioned it was not...?! Money and power were already mentioned above.

The same goes for women with money and power. Those cases are only rarer because there are fewer women like that.

Women have it worse. And the main reason is they generally make it worse for themselves. Many on this thread have made the point that women can diet, get a makeover etc and it's very true. In fact, most women who are "gorgeous" are actually greatly aided by makeup and so forth. But when a woman loses confidence in herself, she lets herself go. Therefore, her average looks (which the vast majority of women have anyways) turn to unattractive. Confidence is a very underrated characteristic trait that men are very attracted. Furthermore, the average yet confident woman goes to the salon and makes herself look pretty. I have a friend who is a journalist and has met many stars in Hollywood. He has told me the two most naturally beautiful women he has met are Scarlett Johansson and America Ferrara. And America Ferrara, despite her perfect face struggles with her weight. Think about that, ladies.

Women. Every single day at classes or even in town I'll see a guy that looks like a hobbit and a girl that looks like a model. Guys can be as ugly as a stump but have a lot of money and have beautiful women all over them. You hardly ever see a really good looking guy with a plain girl. It's a stupid double standard, but it happens.

Ok, maybe it's just me but David Spade is not much to look at but his comedy kinda makes me attracted to him

Then there's icky Howard Stern who is both ugly and has an ugly personality!

I do think the men may have it easier, simply because men aren't expected to doll themselves up. Women are. So:

a. If we don't doll ourselves up in just the right way, we're considered either "hos" on one end of the spectrum, or "too plain/too vanilla" on the other.

b. If we don't doll ourselves up at all, we're "just not trying". (Note: Obviously these don't apply to every single woman on earth, but as a general rule, this is the feeling that the expectation creates.)

c. Since any woman can have access to makeup, the plainer ones look less plain, but the already nice-looking ones look beautiful. The gap is still definitely there.

d. Women (in general...again, not every woman) tend to be less fixated on obtaining a mate who is good-looking than men are. So men are "allowed" to be kind of doggy.

e. "Messy" men are considered rugged and often, they're even considered to be in vogue. It was done with (in historical order from the 1920s) rogues, rakes, flyboys, beatnicks, the grunge look and the whatever-the-hell-you-call-that-cut-with-a-blunt-spoon-and-never-washed look today.

With all that said, who cares? If you're not incredible looking, all you're missing out on is getting someone who demands an incredible-looking person. Who on earth needs that kind of pressure, you know?

Women have it worse. When I try to pair a male friend up with a female friend, he focuses all of his questions on her looks (is she thin?, pretty?, height?). My female friend's questions are about what he does for a living.

The basic question is "who is more shallow?". As far as the US goes, probably men. As far as my "circle", I'd say the women are more shallow.

But to answer the OP, probably women have it harder. Guys can smooth talk their way to the back seat.

Yes, more shallow and more very stuck up. Which is why I stay away from people who are bad and shallow.
