I like both, theyre great animals. Studies have shown that sometimes a kitten can heal a sick person faster than medicine...its the companionship. Later in the future, I would love to have a dog. A big dog, maybe a shepherd.
We're both dog people, but I also love cats - had them growing up. DH doesn't like them. I would not have a cat in the US though, because I don't like the idea of keeping them inside, and wouldn't want to have a litterbox. If we lived in the UK in the country somewhere we might have a cat.
Our dog is gorgeous and totally part of the family.
I have to admit, I think cats would be great out in the country because they can stay outdoors and catch little unwelcome critters. Indoor cats tend to climb on everything, shedding their fur all over the place, and yes, there's tha litterbox issue. Putting them outside only increases their chance of being hit by a car, or shot by some mean neighbour.

In college, when I had a sore throat, my cat would sleep on my neck at night. The next morning my sore throat would be gone!
Boy, this whole cat vs. dog debate is really tedious. And, quite frankly, if you're a dog person who refuses to date somebody who is not into dogs, then you're socially retarded.
Both have pros and cons. In the end, when our present cat goes to the great litter box in the sky, however, we're done with pets.

If you really love your cats, it's best to keep them indoors. Indoor cats will live many years longer than outdoor cats. Also, outdoor cats do significantly impact the local bird populations. They don't just catch mice. And with West Nile virus hurting our bird populations, they need all the help they can get. This morning, my wannabe dog cat brought home a dead robin and it's not like he eats his kill.

You put a lot more work into dogs, but they will work for you later. You put zero work into cats, but they make your house smell like p*ss later. And they bring dead animals to you because they think you will be impressed.
