Actually, I've tried dating sites in the past but none of them really produced any candidates that I would consider a suitable spouse for me. But a couple of years ago, I did meet a wonderful woman through another local forum in Arizona. I actually met her at a get-together in June 2 years ago, with a bunch of other people. We spoke briefly before she left, then her and I met up again 6 months later.
You're too picky, Mike! That's how you must've made it as a bachelor for so long.

You've waited enough... wait a little longer and the technology might advance to a point of being able to assemble a wife out of desirable parts. You might be able to wire her brain the right way, too.

I had my profile on Yahoo.com personals and I have to caution guys out there with Russian and other foreign women, who contact you and make it sound like they're interested in you and moving to the United States.

I got a message from one such woman in Russia, this was 5 years ago in 2003. I didn't think anything of it, and I was looking for somebody who lived in the Phoenix metro area. But she made it sound like she was interested in me and wanted to marry and have kids and all these wonderful things. We kept in contact with each other through Yahoo email messages, then around September of 2003, she mentioned that she wanted to visit me for about a month, and I thought this is kind of strange, and I told her that she would have to stay at a hotel in Phoenix. She agreed, and about a week later she asked if I could help her with the airline tickets, from Moscow to London, and London to Phoenix, the passport, and other expenses related to travel. That's when red flags started going up everywhere. She had also called me on the phone one morning and we talked for about 10-15 minutes, I wasn't sure if she had sincere motives or not.

One of my associates at the office told me that he knew somebody who fell for one of these, a very beautiful Russian woman scammed him out of about $4000! He said that many women from Russia and other foreign countries do this for a living. So my gut feelings about this gal that was contacting me were correct. I forgot the exact amount she was asking for, but it was around $2200. I sent her an email message, and I was upfront with her and asked her what her motives were, and if she was one of those scammers, and I never heard back from her again!

I kept getting messages from other Russian ladies, but they went straight to the deleted items, and I deactivated my Yahoo profile a couple of years ago.

Wow. How stupid was that? Did this guy fall for the Nigerian oil wheeze, too?

Yeah, we foreigners are EVIL!!!

Joke aside, while what you describe does sound like a scam, if you go this route and the lady happens to live in a country with lower standard of living you probably will have to absorb most of the costs associated with meeting.

It's not stupidity, he probably didn't know. A single man searching for love on Yahoo and other similar sites, then he gets a response from a beautiful woman in Russia, if he didn't know, that would definitely shift his perspective on things. If I remember correctly, my associate told me that the guy was contacted sometime in the late 1990's, probably before these types of scams became well-known.
