I'm at a bookstore checking out some books and having a cup of coffee. It turns out that a "regular" in the cafe is being too noisy, so this man sitting next to me and I strike up a conversation about the noisy person once he had gotten up and left. I detect an accent and ask him about his origins. He is a Francophone and has been here for amost 50 years. We proceeded to talk about life, immigration and travel for the next 30 minutes, in French, while I finished my coffee.
Out of all the seats in these places, the foreigners always end up next to me. I am not in the slightest bit ethnic looking. This "conversation in a foreign language" thing with strangers in public happens about once a month. I think it's a good thing.
that sounds like fun. I'm working on learning Spanish and Italian.
