For those who wanted an update:

He is going to recover. He is not talking, but is aware. Apparently there is some damage to his larynx, but it is not permanent. He smiled and held my hand. I coudn't stay long, however I'm glad I went. He looks suprisingly better than what I imagined for someone being in a bad wreck. It was good to see him, if even under the circumstances.

I agree, there is a connection and obviously he's trying to communicate. I know it sounds hoaky but I do believe in that stuff.
