Default Keeping up appearances - The church and children

Another scratch the head question. My niece reminded me that my 15 year old nephews confirmation was coming up soon. I don't get it. My sis isn't catholic my bro in law is, but NEVER goes to mass, yet they send all three kids to catholic schools. My sis isn't particularly religious nor is her hubby, yet my youngest niece still has alter duties and newphew still have to participate in all the other goobly goo stuff the Catholic church. Today I find out that not only is he not thrilled about up coming confirmation but he doesn't belive in a god. I was 2 years younger than him when I also realised there wasn't a god and that religon was a crock.

Part of the reason for starting them on on this catholic thing was because in order to get into the elementary schools she wanted for them they had to be catholic or attend mass regularly, but now they are all in high school and the fascade continues. Besides of all the churches they had to pick catholic?

Do any of you do this with your kids?

****IF THIS BELONGS IN RELIGION, PLEASE MOVE ***

Yep. This is a religious thread. Move please. And plenty of us don't believe that our faith is a crock. Thanks.

Most people do this type of thing b/c in the end, they want their children to have a religious foundation and then decide for themselves whether or not they want to continue in the church when they are older. This way, it is their decision. They have been given the education and been raised w/ the traditions - so as they get older - they can either continue w/ those traditions or find a different path for themselves.

Your nephew sounds like my boyfriend. His family is Catholic and he's never believed in god. And he didn't like the Catholic school that they put him in and was happy when they threw him out. He was a big child that the other boys liked to try to pick on. One nun liked to rap his knuckles until they bled. All in all a lose-lose situation.

His grandparents were very religious. His mom's a good woman but recently remarried and her new hubbie is an atheist. His sisters love to go to mass. His little sister is against gay marriage bigtime and a hardcore Sarah Palin fan. Anyway, he loves living up in MA where no one cares if you're religious or not, it's just no one's business. Of course, we had the whole pedophile Catholic priest scandal here. Shrug.

Yup I can see it clearly. Definately a religion thread. Still think it's a crock though.

Whistles twiddles thumbs while waiting for mod to move thread.

I went to a boarding catholic girls school for 3 years and HATED it. My dads idea, he wasn't religious and my mum raised me as a 7th day adventist and hated the idea of me in a catholic boarding school. I would never do that to any child of mine.

its a social issue, what the OP presents
people need religion b/c they cant deal with reality on their own
it is a shame that people have to give their kids such a headfVck
and for why? the parents ego in already receiving the same headfvck. i forgot

Actually, I had a close friend when I was in my 20's and she had some real horror stories about the nuns that taught her in grade school. And more smacking with the ruler too.

But many parents feel that private schools are better than public schools. And that too much discipline is better than too little of it.

I think there are many who would disagree about a Catholic education being hooey. My DH feels he was quite privileged to receive his Catholic school education.
