I like good movies, you know, ones where i dont feel like my time is being wasted. I'm talking about seriously funny movies, like Friday or good action flicks like Die Hard and classic movies like Dirty Harry. I weigh a movie by whether or not i would watch it again and whether or not i felt like that 2 hours or so was well spent.
When people like a lot of the new dumb "slap stick" comedy movies that come out now, it does make me think twice about their intellegence. I cant even think of any off the top of my head. O wait, Anchorman. It had some funny parts, i admit that, but i wouldnt dare sit through the entire thing again. Towards the end i felt like i was losing brain cells by still sitting there. Then i meet people who say "this is the best movie ever" and i basically cant trust anything they say.
The few movies I watch are hodgepodgy. My favorites are "Wayne's World", "Fight Club", "Fargo", and "So I Married an Axe Murderer". I don't think this necessarily means much.
I dont go to movies much because so many are crap. I also ask myself was that worth 2 hours and $10? Most recent movies I liked were Michael Clayton and There will be Blood, and No Country for Old Men. But I'll admit its hard to turn away from Clint Eastwood movies or Godfather, Braveheart, Gladiator, or Tarantino stuff.
To answer the OP, I think yes you gain appreciation for some movies with time. In my teens and 20s I liked more comedies. If I meet someone in their 30s or older who thinks movies like Pineapple Express are great I wonder about their maturity.
I'd say the movies I like reflect my mood more than anything else. Usually, I want to watch comedies, but good ones don't come along very often. I definitely have a penchant for odd, foreign films and kung fu films. Lately, I've liked westerns. Must mean I want to shoot something. Definitely it's my mood dictating what I watch.
i rarely go to the movies. the film really really has to be worth it.
its funny that someone mentioned waynes world because i was goign to say that there are comedies which are just stupid and a waste of MY time. including waynes world, ace ventura, austin powers etc. all those with "fart" humor.
if i am going to spend time at a theater it better be worth it. having said that...
GO SEE MILK, sean penn is amazing.
thats the type of movie that is worth seeing. and i think that would speak to the depth of a person.
