Awkward Situation
DH and I went out for dinner with our neighbors for the first time recently.
Since then DH has been down to a 'guys' afternoon watching sports with them.
Last night, just as we were settled on the sofa finishing off dinner, there was a knock on the door, and it's our neighbor bringing us a bag of shrimp from Costco. I think we must have expressed interest when chatting at dinner (exciting topic I know ).
Anyway, I was in my 'way too low cut for guests' pjs (and no bra), and dh is in his. House is in a state with coats flung on the back of chairs and kitchen full of my attempts at making dinner.
I am SO GRATEFUL that they would think of us while they were out, and buy us a gift, but it was kind of awkward. I hid on the sofa and yelled hello, and that I'm in my pjs so I'm staying over here.
Neighbor asked DH if he had a spare beer he could do without, so DH invited him in to get one.
Meanwhile I'm hiding on the sofa in the living room.
I feel kind of strange about having hid on the sofa while he was here. It seems rude, but it was either that or give him way more of an eye full than he was expecting (and I am ample in that area).
So I'm thinking an invitation up for drinks, thanks for the gift, and a joke about me not wearing guest appropriate clothes may be in order.
Thoughts??
Any thoughts about how to have handled it better? If I could have got to the bedroom to put another top on quickly I would have done, but it's in a direct line of site from the door. Maybe I should just let him have the eye full, but to be honest if I'm going to put them on display I prefer it to be in a controlled way - bra and low cut top, not pjs with nothing left to the imagination!

I dunno..thats..do not answer the door wear for me...lol
We just got done with x-mas and no one gifted you with a robe?
FOR SHAME!
I like those VS satin robes. They do not take up a lot of room in the closet and the come in short cuts.
Get one.

Lol, I know!! I actually DO have a robe.... and different pjs that I would have had no problem answering the door in. DH just happens to like these ones more for some reason!
We live in a condo building, if we hadn't answered he would have been able to hear that we were there but not answering - even more awkward!! Especially as he had a great big bag of shrimp in his hand for us!

Well, one should never spurn a friendly gesture, unless it's overbearing and suffocating. It sounds as if they're enjoying a new friendship and are just trying hard to cement matters.
I think inviting them for drinks and making the joke is the right way to go. After all, they're probably just as embarrassed about it as you are. Unless, of course, you guys decide to get really chummy and start getting in the hot tub together.
What time of day was it anyway? If it were around 7:30 or so, it wouldn't have been unreasonable for him to expect you fully dressed.

Could your hub just opened the door a crack and said "just a minute?" while you went upstairs to get a robe or something?
I'm sure a civilized human being could have just waited patiently while you two threw on some better clothes, I mean if it was after dinnertime, they shouldn't expect you guys to be prepared for guests?
*maybe he'll take a subtle hint and call first next time!*

I think you handled it just fine. Invite them over for cocktails and shrimp cocktails and all will be good.

Oh it totally wasn't his fault (although a 5 minute call ahead of time would have been nice ). It literally was around 7.30pm. I had got cold earlier and was in pjs and under a blanket. DH had changed into his as soon as he got home from work. Actually quite unusual for us to be in pjs so early, but OF COURSE that's the day we get a visitor!

Yeah, that would probably have been best. Problem is we were taken by surprise so didn't really think what to do. Also our place is all on one level. He would literally have had to shut the door in his face to give me a chance to make my escape!
Oh well, no harm done I hope. I do think it was a lovely gesture on their part and we'll let them know that when we invite them up for drinks!

Oh, and..... not a chance!! They are very friendly with a lot of people in the building, but I don't think there's any hanky panky going on - his wife is pregnant for one thing!
