Someone else that agrees with me! Years ago, I would go to car message board meets and to be honest, most of the guys and gals were funnier and more entertaining online than in person. So between this aspect of internet interactions plus the great geographic distance between the two of you, this guy may be being sensible and kind by not leading you on to think that there's a chance of the two of you having a real relationship. Guys really count on a romance having some real physical sexual satisfaction. So if neither of you have any desire to move closer to each other, then there's really no point in being romantic towards each other.
I feel that when you've suggested meeting him in person, he's also had the impression that you are sweet on him. So he's just preventing you from ruining your online friendship by not encouraging you to visit him.
