Is there ever a reason to lie?
Not normally, but I think there are times when discretion is necessary.
To save someone's feelings, avoid unneccessary conflict, or because the truth would cause more harm than good.
Spouses do it all the time. (ie finding someone attractive is best kept to yourself. Things like that)
If a coworkers dress doesn't look good but you really don't care to discuss it or hurt her feelings, you just say it looks good and she's happy and moves on?
Even to society we may keep things to ourselves or tell them what they wanna hear/see to avoid judgement or comments that we didn't ask them for. Depends on the topic, but that would apply to more controversial things. Go with the status quo to keep the peace and keep your real thoughts to yourself.
Totally honesty just isn't necessary 100% of the time imho
Anyone else?

Agreed. I can think of times when lying has been absolutely necessary.

An old friend
of mine always had to be "truthful" with me about myself (never about himself though) which is why he is an "old" friend now

I had a SO that used to be overly honest about everything too. I used to get so mad and tell them it was ok to keep some things to yourself. I don't need to know everything your thinking.

Sure, if it causes greater harm to tell the truth. By that, I don't mean avoiding punishment for something you've done.
Also, how would we ever throw surprise parties?

Gentlemen, I'm looking out for your best interest here!
When your lady asks if her posterior looks substantial in that dress (staying pg-13 ), the one and only answer should be: "NO, honey!".

Yet, I guarantee you that some zealot will come on here and say, "No. It's never appropriate to tell even a white lie." These people are either not in a relationship or have sizable dents in their head from being clocked once too often with a skillet.
