Married People.....when did you know your S.O. was IT
I'm a long time reader (but don't post very often in two years) of these forums and I've noticed a lot of confusion among many about relationships and the many twists, turns, and variables that come in to play. I thought that it might be a good idea if some of you happily married folks could share how or when you KNEW for sure that your S.O. was the one for you. There may be some wisdom for some in your answers. What was it? Can you even really explain it?

I used to be indecisive. Now, I'm not so sure.

I knew when he met my family and didn't run away screaming that maybe he'd be my special guy.

I was visiting my parents after our wild and crazy 3 nights together. I was lying awake in bed thinking about him. In a horrible lapse of judgement, I called him at 2am!
I said, "I'm really sorry to wake you, but I just had to hear your voice."
He said, "I wasn't sleeping. I can't sleep. I just keep thinking about you."
It was one of those moments you never forget. It then that that we both knew that it was much, much more than just a fling.

It took about a year. We were friends and shared a number of classes together. I was dating another girl, and she was dating another guy, but when we were all together the two of us always seemed to just hit it off.
I was always infatuated with her, but never thought she would give me the time of day. She was the most beautiful girl in the world (to me) and I was just an average Joe kinda guy, so I never really pushed it. She never once made any passes at me either.
So one Christmas season, I invited my Russian language classmates over for a Christmas party at my house (that was one of the classes I shared with her for a couple years). Well apparently my classmates had a plan- they told me they would be there but when the evening rolled along no one showed up. No one except 'her'. Apparently it was obvious to them I liked her, and she liked me, so they concocted the scheme to get us together- 'alone'.
So there we were, friends for sure, but a very awkward moment. We talked for a long while, about past girlfriends and boyfriends, and how much Christmas meant to us.. and then i asked her if I could kiss her. When she said "Yes", I swear I almost fainted. The rest of the evening we kissed, held hands and talked.
That was definitely the moment I knew. We dated for 5 more years, then engaged, and have been married 19 years since. Even though we married in June, December 23rd will always be our real anniversary.

There's a line from a Leonard Cohen song I like: I don't trust my inner feelings. Inner feelings come and go.
Some days I "just know", others I just know I want some room to breathe. Regardless of how I feel about it, I try to stick to the game plan and honor her and my commitment to her so long as she continues to keep up her end of the bargain by honoring me and her commitment to me.

When she said "I Do"
Until then my certainty came and drifted and came again. We had a long engagement and there were times when it appeared that it was nto going to work out. However we have been married for almost 20 years and I have never had any doubt once we were married. Not that all has been roses, but we enjoy a great relationship becasue we work at it.
Do not think that once you decide that this is the one, it is over. It is something that you both have to work at forever. But the work can be fun.

We had dated on and off in high school and after college I had come home before going overseas. I had to call him and he answered the phone and he said "Hello" and I said "Elliot?" and his response was "Oh my God it is you."...we had not talked in almost 5 years until I called him.
That was it. I knew we would be together forever. I said "While I'm in town we should get together" and he said "Have you eaten dinner yet?" and he was at my house 15 minutes later! We have not been apart since.
