It must have been pretty ugly, if she is getting a divorce because of the mother in law.

Bad mother-in-law not good. Marriage must be bad to start with to get divoce because of mother-in-law. People need to pull head out of ass and learn to get along despite bad mother-in-law.

Having had a couple of annoying "in-laws", I can see why someone would want to bail.
I'll leave it to hubby to handle it. If he doesn't I will. If that's a problem, buh bye. I'm not going to live my life with some nutjob interfering with my peace.

She couldn't get her husband to move out of state with her to get away from his MIL? I agree that having annoying in-laws could be a deal breaker. But usually physically moving far away from the problem is enough.

I dunno, I think having to move is a bit much. That's just geography. It doesn't change MIL's behavior. The woman needs to know the boundaries.

It has EVERYTHING to do with him. He'd likely have more of an effect on his mother than she will. Hopefully his mother will be great company for the rest of his life.

Having grown up with, and been trained to accept her behavior, Husband is more than likely simply blind to his mother's bad act. I'd lay dollars to donuts he tells his wife "that's just the way she is. it's never bothered me, why should it bother you?"
I bet MIL probably lays the guilt on the guy as well. People don't seem to realize the emotionally enmeshed situations that exist between some mothers and sons - to the point of emotional incest in some worst cases. The women are simply not able to let go of their sons and acknowledge that they are now grown, don't need her, and want to go off and make their own families.
The MIL stories board (I wish they'd take "jokes" out of the URL ) is probably the best place to read horror stories about the worst MILs
