To be honest, I think my sense of humor has acted as a nice "filter" for finding mates. Any guy who is intimidated by my wit or intelligence is not the man for me.
Good post and I agree...didn't "playing dumb to please men" go out about 50 years ago??? My,my, some people have a hard time progressing!

....don't men know how weak and frightened they look by putting down witty, intelligent women???

whereas men valued receptivity to their own humour

This says it right here. Most guys really want to be stroked and appreciated as much as possible.

And I revisited this, I came up with the same conclusion.

Yeah, whatever.

The funniest, most hilarious women, like comedic funny, are usually unattractive.

I never said that women I'm attracted to don't ever make me laugh. But from what I've observed, the very funny ones aren't good looking.

So what if a woman is good-looking and witty?
Interesting question but I think from most people you observe, men don't want a witty woman even if she's attractive. How often do you see witty, funny trophy women proudly being paraded around?

They prefer a more neurotic type and then will complain later about the humorless witch they're stuck with. That's not true of all men of course.

I think that for most men, humorous and/or witty celebrities would include:

Heather Locklear, Lani Anderson, Goldie Hawn, Sandra Bullock, Heather Graham. Attractive and don't seem to take themselves too seriously.

Another VERY witty woman is Dolly Parton...ya, she's a real "dog" like all the ones you mentioned
It's so silly that men, when they don't like something about a woman , insist she's not "good looking"....

Well, of course - and women want the same thing.

A lot of people are equating witty with comedian. Sure, most female comedians aren't too pretty (male ones aren't great looking either), but there are plenty of physically attractive, funny women. Granted, you rarely hear a guy say he's with his SO (in part) because she makes him laugh. Women say that a lot though.

There's many different styles of funny too. Witty doesn't have to mean biting or caustic either. I find most witty people to not be the type who are cracking jokes all the time or who describe themselves as "funny", but are more subtle with their humor. Conversely, the people who you'd describe as "funny" are louder and more obvious, and they seem to realize they are "entertaining". The mark of intelligence seems to be with the former, but the latter style seems more intimidating to men, as it steals the limelight.
