Wow I am fairly new to forums... I am amazed at how many people seem to have a completely different alter ego displayed online.

Having read a few threads and participated in one or two.(hehehehe) I think there is value in the anonymity of the web. A self help outlet so to speak.

Do you know any extremes where the librarian is the dominatrix online...

Or the hard core marine is the best "dear abby" online.....

Is the internet creating a new generation of multiple personalities?

Maybe.

With me - what you see is what you get. I will say the very same things to your face in person that I would post in these forums.

Let me ask my alter ego. He might know.

For me, the "anonymity" allows me to be myself. Why lie? It wouldn't serve any purpose to lie to folks you're unlikely to ever meet face to face. Being yourself means getting genuine advice (if that's what you're looking for). Assuming whoever you're chatting with here is being truthful, it allows you to be also.

I'm 3 times as obnoxious in person as I am on here. Especially after a few gin and tonics.

I agree, I say very honest and open things about myself online that I would have too many inhabitions about saying in "real life".

I don't think it has created a split personality for me. But it has allowed me to express my inner thoughts and feelings that I wouldn't dare express to any of my real friends and family. It is a good outlet for me.

+1

I got into all of this to get a few things off my chest, process, the guilt and hopefully read a few pointers on how to resurrect my marriage.
