Unfortunately depression can be a major medical issue like it or not that requires counseling. If you are unwilling to figure out what is making you depressed through counseling then you are in for a rough ride trying to get over this by yourself. The only things I can think to tell you to try are first of all, go over your day and see if perhaps there is anyone or anything going on during the day that irks you. Sometimes before depression comes anger over something you would like to control but can't. People get sad and depressed when they feel like they are losing control and that is what I hear from your post. Next, ask yourself if you are bored with your life the way it is now. What could you do different that would make your life easier? What do you feel needs "fixing"?
These are hard times right now economically with people struggling every day to make ends meet. The news stories on TV are sad stories because sad news sells unfortunately. People homeless or living in tents, people angry over the story about octomom and the octuplets...all this anger and resentment and hard times is bound to create an atmosphere of depression for lots of folks.
Wait and see how long you stay in this state of mind and then face reality...you may very well need to talk to someone. Your family physician will point you in the right direction I am sure.
Good luck and try to find more joy in your family...they are a gift.

With no disrepect intended what so ever to Connecticut Pam but I would not do the wait and see how long you stay in this state of mind and then face reality. I have been dealing with severe depression and anxiety for the past five years. Why I got here is a long story but lets just say It started out gradually and then eventually before I knew it I was avoiding my family and friends became very suicidal. Would not even leave the house during the day not even to go out side. The only time I left was when it was midnight or later when there was not many people in the stores or on the roads. I had tried different medicines, talked to counselors and even hospitalized. To make what could be a very long story short It took my whole family (husband and kids) getting in to a car accident (85 mile and hour head on collision) to bring me around. The meer thought that I almost had lost every one of them scared me so much. Its been all most two years since the accident and Yes I am on the right anti depressant and two anxiety medications. Im still not the person I was before I became depressed but I can leave my house (still have anxiety attacks caused by numerous things) I enjoy my family and I now take it just one day at a time and yes I still have bad days.
I hope you take what is happening to you more serious that I did. If I had I would not have lost five years of my life with my husband and kids. This is something I cant get back but I strive to improve every day.
Adults forget how to play well some do anyways and it's very sad. It's not like you grow out of playing and goofing around because every one no matter what age kids around to an extent.
So go play red light green light or hide-n-seek
I don't care who dismisses this, it is an excellent idea.
Climb a tree or a wrought iron fence. Start a snowball fight with strangers. Roll around on the ground with a dog. Learn to juggle. Act in a play. Coach or be a boy/girl scout leader so you're around kids who DO remember how to play.
I've done all of these things in the past year, and I feel fine

ANYTHING BUT SEX....good therapy indeed , typical female point of view.

I'm too fat to climb trees, there are no iron fences around, there is no snow on the ground, I don't own a dog, I don't have a how to juggle handbook, I am a bad actor, there aren't any boy/girl scouts nearby.
So SEX would the feasable thing to do then .

lol, climb a tree? Does Mr. Cat look like a 5 year old? He is a grown man with grown man issues that need to be nurtured with much care and much concern.
Although, acting in a play is therapeutic from what I have heard.

Please sir, I beg of you. Please watch another episode of Seinfeld. It is the only thing that will save your sanity.
