"no one seemed to have much in common with each other."
Super extroverts will talk about stuff regardless of what other people have in common. They just keep talking. And talking and talking. The women will talk about their kids, husbands, car, house, relatives, random other people, all kinds of crazy things. The men will talk about sports, activities, wife, girlfriend, random other people, trivia, work, something they read somewhere, something they saw on the news somewhere, a movie, a song, all kinds of crazy things. It's not so much talking "with" people, more like talking "at" people. Perhaps you were expecting some response and that's where the awkwardness comes from. It has nothing to do with "something in common" or not.

I'm having mixed thoughts here after reading your post.. I'm imagining coming to a registration desk ( where past experience is those folks cant keep their mouths shut) and meeting a group of people who didn't want to talk or be very social. Who picked that crew.. If I cant talk I may sing ever so lowly or even hum a tune or three....and somebody save you if you got in front of me.....You'd a gotten a full blown presentation on whatever it was you was signing up for. I guess what Im saying is no I cant imagine a situation like that. I just wouldn't let that exist.....
In your scenario, I would be happy to remain silent.
