It's amazing how that market has expanded and what deals they are giving now to fill cabins. I've gone on a couple of transatlantic crossings while a child and a teen and if I ever went for leisure, I'd check out the Western Mediterranean (Italy, Spain, North Africa). My (combative) co-worker is going on an Eastern Mediterranean (Italy, Greece) trip with his family this summer.
You can now board ships in Mobile AL, New Orleans and Galveston TX (port of Houston) and head into the Caribbean or Mexico. Those places have built ship terminals to service passengers.

Besides Vegas, has anyone done anything fun like that? I'm looking for suggestions since you guys seem to be a lot more creative than me.

Zip lining in Costa Rica is awesome!!! If you're in Houston, Costa Rica is only 4 hours away by plane. Beautiful eco-vacation spot. You can also raft down rivers, have monkeys drop down into your raft from trees above, watch the Jesus Christ lizards (yes, that's what they call them) run across water, walk around at night surrounded by millions of fireflies all lit up, hike to a volcano.... one of my favorite vacation spots.

Guidelines are:
1) No kids.
2) I'm bringing a gal with me
3) It should fit in a long weekend so that rules out something like say...going to Italy.
4) Might invite friends\family to meet up there
I'm also thinking of maybe sky-diving or doing something else different like that. Just getting out of my comfort zone type stuff.

You are smart to plan your 40th in advance. When I turned 40, someone threw me a big party the usual thing..it was ok and a nice gesture but like you, I felt a need to do something more adventuresome; never did so when I turned 41...I broke up with this guy...he was so not for me..LOL
Have you ever considered a vacation in the mountains? I see these shows all the time where people are bungie jumping off these bridges in the mountains or they are clipped onto those lines that span across the rivers and they shoot across the river on a harness...white water rafting would have been my choice for my 40th. My sister in law did the white water rafting thing and she said it was awesome..I believe on the Colorado river..not sure on that.
So...whatever you do decide to do...be careful and stay all in one piece! Being out of your comfort zone is one thing but being foolish is something else..LOL

MathGuy,
Have you thought about not doing anything special at all? The reason I ask that is because people tend to make a big deal out of milestone birthdays like 30, 40, or 50. The more significance you attach to it, the more likely you are to take stock of your life or start comparing yourself to others of the same age. I do my best to avoid falling into that trap. When I turned 30, I did nothing different. I woke up, went to work, came home and spent a quiet evening at home. By not making a big deal out of it, I didn't go through any of the emotions that all my friends did when they turned 30. I can understand wanting to get out and do something different or getting out of your comfort zone. But why wait til you turn 40? Why not do it now?

I'm really just using it as an excuse to have one heckuva party\goodtime.
I have encountered or made PROFOUND changes in my life in the past year and actually try to do new things all the time. (I'm going to a rock concert Friday for the first time in >10 years...Offspring!)

I always try to do something special/meaningful to me, on my birthday, because I'm so glad to have survived another year! So I actually get health check-ups around the time of my birthday, donate money to charities, throw big parties for my family and friends because I'm grateful for their love and friendship, go zip-lining in Costa Rica...
To me, celebrations are just another wayto show appreciation/recognition for blessings bestowed, so I absolutely agree with your advice to do something special NOW

I would but I want to invite you and the terms of your parole would pretty much rule out that venue right?

Math. I recommend you buy a wolf shirt. You just can't believe the mystic powers this thing has.
