I'd say I am on track to a dream life. So far everything is going as planned.
I have no debt and by 25 years old I'll be a CPA, own my own condo outright (saving up for it right now). I also own a small online based business (hence the reason I am online so much lol) and I plan to eventually start my own CPA firm. Even if I don't get a good paying job my life will still be exceptionally well. Being debt free and having a paid off condo will increase my standard of living significantly.
As far as family, kids etc I could careless about those things. I think they are way overrated. I prefer to have a successful career, successful business and successful investments.
Oh, I bet underneath that steel cage you have around your heart, you are a real softie. If you had a baby, you'd fall in love with it the minute you laid eyes on it.
I've lived a lot of my dreams and have a "dream job". It took longer than expected, but I've had some measure of success. Also I realized once I achieved a dream or goal there was another mountain in front of me to climb, so it is never ending.
A lot of it is knowing what you want, whether that goal is large or small, and then figuring out how to accomplish it. I just never give up and I don't let negative comments from others affect me.
Also I think you have to realize there will be trade offs and there is no free lunch in the world. My future brother in law has a boring "city" job with a condo and all the trappings of a yuppie. I don't have all that designer stuff, but I have a very interesting and well traveled life. All depends what you want. Do you want the stuff or the experiences? It's likely you wont be able to have both at full tilt unless you are a trust fund baby.
Also that there are ups and downs and blocked paths along the way. Commitment is a key word.
I work with other people that clearly the commitment and heart isn't there. That is probably one reason why with a few years experience I am rising quickly past people with 20 years experience.
There are doers and dreamers. I think there is some of each in us. For me I have to dream a bit about it and then I figure out how to execute it and then I do it. Kind of like an "expedition" I guess.
I've got a friend on the other hand that is a dreamer but rarely does anything about it. He's had the same stuff sitting around that he has hardly worked or prepared for five years. He said to me the other day about us doing this one event next year and I said yes I probably would and was already planning it out sourcing the equipment and some staff. When he realized I was dead serious he pulled back as he always does. He likes the idea of it, the dream of it, but doesn't follow through. I just accept that is the way he is and there are a lot of people out there in the world like that, dreamers not doers.
Also for some people they have simple dreams and are content with a house, 9-5 job, nagging wife and the odd vacation to disney world. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Nice post! I admire your outlook.
As for me, well, I really don't know. My dreams have generally been relatively modest. I think my career is going pretty well - not exactly as I imagined it when I was in high school/college, but I certainly can't complain. I have a nice social life, and I'm involved in some interesting things. But there's some things I could really improve, and I think I ought to do more to further my goals. Get back to me in ten years...
