so how does one differentiate between someone who does that and someone who just happens to meet a person she's actually interested in as a person?

I too am over this silly term. If a cougar is a woman who is a lot older than her guy, how the hell can you say there are a lot of "cougars" out in the bars? Are you checking out each and every one's eyes to see who they are checking out???

There have always been older women out in certain bars, just like you see older men (and what's their name, huh?) out in those same bars. I don't get it.

According to my daughter's friends, I am a MILF. I am not however, a Cougar. I may be dating someone younger, but I would be just as happy to date someone my age or older as well. I don't actively seek out and date only men who are younger than I am.

Therein lies the difference.

Apparently I'm one too. Where do kids get this stuff?

This doesn't leave me a lot of options for dating. I did give in to the pleadings of an extremely handsome 29yo but got burned (emotionally), so probably won't be pursuing the cougar lifestyle, but I had to try it I guess. The problem is that I'm looking for a real relationship, and while that my be possible with a man 20 yrs younger, it's not likely.

There is also the myth going around that older women are horney and the younger guys want to see if they can just land some. They think the older single woman will be easy, because she can't get any from a guy her own age. Buyer beware.

Also to add to that, a Cougar is OVER age 40.
So you would not consider a 39 year old woman who is dating a 21 year old man for example to be a cougar ?

Women raise their children and then want to return to going out, having fun and having sex.
About that same time, their husbands are settling into a sedentary life style and aren't interested (or interesting) anymore.
So, the women are forced to look elsewhere, and luckily there are plenty of young guys looking to have fun.

You can't. That's why the term is truly useless.

I *think* the MILF concept went crazy after the first American Pie movie in 1999. In the film, Stifler's sexy mom was a MILF that all the high school boys liked to fantasize about.
