Unless there is intervention from the people I predict there will be a two class system in America (lazy rich, working poor) so you are right in that you should not wait until "things get better." In fact, one of the keys in life to be successful is to be PRO-active instead of waiting around for conditions to improve.

As far as what you should do with your life? Well, I suggest you take the time to listen to the inner voice inside of you (which it sounds like you are doing) and use it to help guide you in your life. Most people don't listen to the voice because there ego is too big. Anyhow, once you get the basic blueprint THEN you can ask people how to handle the logistics.

BTW, get a copy of this book to help you on your quest.....

Amazon.com: The Opening of the Way: A Practical Guide to the Wisdom Teachings of Ancient Egypt: Isha Schwaller de Lubicz: Books
Thanks for the feedback and link. You're probably right about the economy. There will still be a middle class but it's shrinking for sure. Here's the dilemma though regarding switching careers....I can stay in this career (corporate IT) and perhaps make a decent living for awhile (lots of ageism in the field) but likely be stressed out all the time. Or find another career that I will be happier in and not make very good money. Honestly it's not the work that stresses me out, it's the environment.

I've been where you are and didn't do anything about it and at 53 am sorry. You need to shake things up. I'm very into security so I understand the job thing is hard but you need to really get down into the research and find some sort of compromise work wise and move. Most college towns are good places but also expensive, still I would target them, further south if you cant take the cold like in Madison. Take the hit financially while your young. If you meet people and network and get hitched you double your income....you create a future where you will be able to make up the deficit.

I've considered Chicago and can't really say I'm a huge fan of the city (too much traffic, congestion, high cost of living) but have considered the north side (near Wrigley field). Do you know how much apartments rent for up there?
Way too expensive. Stay away from Chicago if you are concerned about the cost of living - highest sales tax in the nation.

aloha dude, If you are single and have no real ties I would think about moving...somewhere. you can go anywhere in the world. an hours commute is way too long and being in a job that sucks is not good for you. day after day that can make you depressed. sounds like you need some action and excitement, friends your own age. I would start by looking at the map of the entire globe. make a list of where you would want to go and the kinds of jobs you could do. look at all the web sites that offer jobs and go from there. you do not need to be dragged down by two parents fighting or living in a place that has nothing to do. you could even sell your house, get rid of your stuff, store the important things and start fresh somewhere. when you are young is the only time you can really do this easily. good luck...lots of places out in the world

Yep. The commute was ok for awhile but it got old after awhile and it is worse in the winter. On a snowy day it takes an hour and a half to 2 hours to get home....even got stranded a couple of times. Ten hours a week of wasted time, 40 hours a month, that's almost an extra week of work just for commuting!

Thanks for the suggestions. What is the best way to look for a new gig in a distant city? It's not like you can take the morning off to go on an interview.

Figure out a list of cities to look in, find employment, do some looking on the internet then go on an apt hunting trip.

Instead of moving, maybe you can take weekend trips to get away? Also if you're thinking about switching careers, the grass isn't always greener. Just sayin'.

Oh yes, the middle class is shrinking as many young people are moving back home with there parents (not a bad idea anyway) because they can't find work or the jobs that are available don't pay enough to live a decent lifestyle.

As far as your dilemma, I was there about 4 years ago. I had a job where I made 25 bucks and hour with FULL benefits; they even helped you buy a home, however the job was so stressful and mundane that I wanted to quit after about a week. Story short, I lasted for one year then I quit to start my own business and everybody thought I was crazy but now 4 years later I'm making more money in one day then I did a whole week at that job and also the old building where the job was located had shut down and moved which always means people get fired or laid off.

I'm SO HAPPY with what I'm doing and I can only say that it worked out this way because I listened to my inner voice and tuned out all the people who where trying to show me another way. Really, you got to be careful of other people, many people are walking around bitter because they gave up on there own dreams 30 years ago or they had kids too soon and they can be quite jealous of the little responsibility's that you have so they don't feel bad at all telling you wrong information.

So as I said, the ball is in YOUR court and only you can decide whats best for you to do.

looking for jobs in other cities, first I would figure out what you want to do besides the job that you are doing now. I would then look on line at the different cities newspapers for jobs in my field and any that else might be of interest. register at a head hunter agency. there is monster.com. if you are into hotel jobs there is a site for that at hcarrers.com you could also check here on this forum in the state section and ask some questions in the state and city that looks goof to you. your commute sounds terrible not only is it the time on the road, but the wear and tear on your car. the money you save in gas and time could be worth the move closer to your work. either way I would look to do something different within the next year or so. get a plan and give it a whril there you will only have regret if you stay and do nothing to make yourself happy.
