(CNN) -- "Well, what do you think?" his dad asked. Brian Lohse knew exactly what his father was getting at.

His father had never pressed him about marriage before. But the question had its intended effect: a light switch flipped on.

" 'Real men' are perceived as committing 'till death do us part' for the wrong reasons -- they marry out of convenience or under duress, and they acquiesce, kicking and screaming all the way to the altar.

Somewhere along the way, marriage and masculinity became mutually exclusive."

If lots of women are very interested in a man, why would they want to commit to just one?

In contrast, men who are most interested in marriage are the ones who women have the least interest in.

Life is a paradox.

Men have a choice to marry or not. They are not forced into it! I don't think that marrage is for everyone especially if you don't want to be exclusive.

Even that part gets eliminated by her in MANY marriages.

No-No-No Nothing's for Free, Men are going to go to divorce court, they're going to pay her too.

I only read the first few paragraphs, but it's very familiar. My dh really wanted to get married. I felt a bit pushed by him and my mom rather than the other way around.

I don't think any man starts out wanting to get married. I believe the fears of being "tied down" and "comitted" are constantly fueled by peers and media, and even family. (Hey - I've told my own son that he shouldn't even consider it until he's at least 30! )

But I do think that most men, as they get older (and more mature - usually ) start to look at it from a different perspective - one that allows them to actually consider it.

Very true.

I was the same way. I put off our marriage 3 times before succumbing to the need for hourly sex. Now that I'm older (but not too old ) I greatly value our relationship as friends and wonder why I ever waited to marry.

I've been married a uhhhhh*cough mmmmmm time or two and I like being married....I've either had a Mom, wife or girlfriend(sometimes, unfortunately ,all three at the same time) telling me what to do and nagging me since I was born....I'd miss the ass chewings if I was single for any length of time and would actually think I was deaf if they weren't yapping in the background constantly.
