A close friend of mine recently told me that she found out her 16 year old son is having sex with her 28 year old neighbor - she came home from work early and found them in his bedroom.
She wants to press charges against the woman but her husband told her she needs to let it go because all it's going to do is embarrass their son and the most important thing to do right now is talk to him about safe sex.
I know she called because she wanted me to validate her stance on this but a small part of me sides with her husband. Their son is going to be a senior in high school in a few months and in a year going away to college, where he'll be free to sleep with whomever he wants. And in my mind, it's not like the lady was raping him - I don't think this is going to cause him any long-term mental anguish.
When I was in high school it was quite common for the girls to date older guys; nobody seemed to have a problem with it then - it was more like a little status bump to have an older boyfriend
Of course, when I said that to her she told me to remember this day when my son starts having sex what do you guys think?
If it were a 28 year old guy and a 16 year old girl - he would be in jail.
Double standard.
That's what my friend is saying; they also have an 11 year old daughter and she told her husband that he would have killed the man. You're right; it is a double standard.

Me too. Knowing her son as I do - he probably hit on the neighbor so it's not like he was siting in his room playing with his PlayStation and she jumped on him.
If I was 16 years old and 39 year old Jennifer Connelly for example came up to me and told me that she wanted to have sex with me, I sure as hell not going to scream rape and call 911.

I agree with Sanrene on this.
I think the woman should be arrested. Has nothing to do with the boy being embarrassed, he's going to be the hero of the neighborhood/school - "Oh my god, you slept with Ms. Parker?".
A 28 year old adult should not have sex with a 16 year old MINOR. There are LAWS STATING THIS IS A FELONY!!!! Dad needs to grow up, mom needs to show more of her level headed influence and call the cops despite what the dad says. How can anyone think different?

I know where you're coming from. When people think older man/young girl they think he's taking advantage of her naivete but when it's a boy it's like "hey you bagged a hot older lady"
I know it's a double standard but....I don't know. I guess I just can't see it from her POV.
