GTOLover,

That is a LOT of info my friend. Going to take me a while to get through it. lol

Anyway, as far as I know, there is nothing yet on the market, at least here in the US, that is why I posed my question the way I did "If there was..."

Would you take it? I mean, if there was a pill that was just as effective as the female pill, very safe, no - or minor side effects, would you take it?

No kidding. All I had to do is give Mrs. CPG a smouldering glance. That's what happens when the world's two most fertile families get married.

I'd have to be IN a relationship to make it worthwhile. During my bouts of singlehood, I wouldn't really see the need.

Well, it would certainly help fill that 14 percent failure rate gap that condoms apparently have. I've been permanently fixed, but back before that when I was running around the singles world, I'd have most certainly used it if it were available.

---------------

I think some of you guys are misunderstanding how it works and what the testosterone is doing.

It's the progestogen that's stopping the sperm production. That's a female hormone (similar to what transsexuals take to become "more female"?), and it counteracts the testosterone that we males normally produce. (Or maybe it just lowers the testosterone level.) Whichever the case, the result is that we must take testosterone hormone replacement or start looking like our sisters.

If you have the little "rod" inserted under the skin, you must take the testosterone replacement therapy separately (shots, patch, etc.). If you take the daily pill, the extra testosterone hormone replacement is included.

It's not a matter of the testosterone "fooling" your body to believe that no sperm production is needed.

By the way, did you notice the date of that article? 2002! I've seen this talked about on the news recently, however.

Quote:
... The participants have tiny rods implanted under the skin of their arm that deliver a form of progestogen (commonly found in the female birth control pill) to block sperm production.

In order to maintain their sex drive and their "male characteristics," the men receive testosterone replacement therapy injections every four to six weeks over the course of the yearlong study. The results should be available by the end of 2002....

How does it work?
The pill contains desogestrel, a synthetic hormone that is the main component in the female pill, as well as the male hormone testosterone. This combination blocks the production of sperm while maintaining male characteristics and sex drive....

Are there any alternatives to the pill?
In addition to the pill, a contraceptive implant will also be made available. As in the clinical trials, tiny rods would be placed under the skin of a man's arm, delivering etonogestrel, a form of progestogen that also blocks sperm production. However, since the rods do not contain testosterone, injections of this hormone would be necessary every four to six weeks. The rods would only need to be replaced every three years, although they could be removed at any time.

Basically, the pill and the implant work the same way. The difference simply lies in the method of administration of the male hormone.

Oh, great, what about the fact that the hormones from birth control are getting into our water supply from people's urine and water treatment plants aren't getting rid of it (eww)?? I have to wonder if this is affecting humans. I know it is affecting fish.
