Let me preface this by saying- I do love my friends. I do, they're fab. Really. But, since I don't see them in-person as often anymore, most of our bonding time is conducted over the phone. Sometimes, I need a break from this. It gets to the point that I know who is calling me by what time of day it is! "Oh, so-and-so is doing such-and-such now, and wants to chat." ~or~ "It's 6 o'clock, so that must be her, because she leaves work at this time and likes to rehash her day." Which is fine, I just realized I needed a break from being "on" all the time, recently, and so I turned "off"- my phone, that is.

My question is: Would you be offended by your good friend doing this? Or would you understand the need for someone to recharge, so to speak?

If they are your friends they will understand you may need a little "hollygolightly" time IMO, there is nothing to feel bad about

Nothing really offends me, so no that wouldnt bother me. I suggest switching to emails or making phone calls less often. I probably talk to close friends a few times a year, plus an email every other month or so. My phone ringer is always off and I usually will not answer it. I also hate cell phones.

Yeah, I have a love/hate thing going on with my cell phone; mostly love, but sometimes I hate (ok, maybe hate is too strong of a word) being overly accessible. Anyone know what I mean? It's like, if someone can't get in touch with you, there must have been some sort of catastrophe, or there are hurt feelings.

and i hate cell phones and don't own one

if you don't want to talk on the phone,
don't answer the phone
that's what voice mail is for

Good point. I think I feel about voicemail the way you feel about cell phones! Check it maybe once a week... if that. My friends mostly know that about me, too, so they won't leave a vm, just keep trying back. I guess that's why the ringer needs to get turned off every now and then.
